Even as the national conversation around diversity, equity and inclusion is muted, Weill Cornell Medicine continues its work to make sure everyone has a seat at the table. That was the message relayed on April 23 by Dr. Linnie Golightly, provost and senior associate dean of academic affairs at CUNY School of Medicine. 

On April 20, Weill Cornell Medicine awarded the Pioneers in Diversity Awards, recognizing commitment to diversity and inclusion through mentorship, service and advocacy.

Advancing health equity in medicine requires a clear-eyed understanding of history, a rejection of race-based clinical assumptions and a commitment to transform research into practice, said Dr. Joseph L. Wright, senior vice president and chief health equity officer of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in his keynote address for Weill Cornell Medicine’s eighth annual Diversity Week. 

Dr. Helen Boucher, dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, delivered the Women in Medicine and Science lecture for Weill Cornell Medicine’s seventh annual Diversity Week.   

Weill Cornell Medicine’s Celebration of Diversity honored leaders who go beyond their official roles, dedicating time, energy and empathy to build inclusive environments. The ceremony, part of the institution’s seventh annual Diversity Week, was held April 7 in Griffis Faculty Club.

Diversity is a tool for truth, not political agendas, said Vincent D. Rougeau,  president of the College of the Holy Cross, in a keynote address.

Weill Cornell Medicine has been awarded the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, for the seventh consecutive year. 

Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz delivered a keynote address entitled “Sex and Gender Medicine: Science, Policy and Health Disparities in CVD,” as part of Weill Cornell Medicine's sixth annual Diversity Week.

The awardees were honored for their commitment to diversity and inclusivity in academic medicine through exemplary contributions in mentorship, research, clinical care, community service and advocacy.

After excluding Black physicians from its ranks for more than 100 years—a policy that wasn’t overturned until the civil rights era in the 1960s—the American Medical Association (AMA) is now painstakingly working to embed health equity across the organization and has declared racism a public health threat, said Dr. Aletha Maybank, the AMA’s inaugural chief health equity officer and senior vice president.

In a celebration of Weill Cornell Medicine’s commitment to fostering inclusivity in academic medicine, the institution on April 25 honored nearly a dozen faculty, students and staff who exemplify excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion.

Women in leadership roles sometimes speak in ways that can make them appear less confident or even competent than they are, said Dr. Deborah Tannen, a distinguished university professor in the linguistics department at Georgetown University, in her keynote address on April 24 for Weill Cornell Medicine’s fifth annual Diversity Week.

At a time when voting rights are under threat, inequality is on the rise and teaching the history of race relations in schools is facing a backlash, diversity and inclusion programs in academic medicine are more important than ever, said Dr. James R. Gavin III, in his keynote address for Weill Cornell Medicine’s fourth annual Diversity Week.

After Elizabeth Blackwell emigrated to the United States from England in 1832, she did something considered unthinkable for women at the time: She entered medical school. 

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed vast disparities in how the virus impacted people of color, with inequalities in exposure and treatment that persist two years later, said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett in her Population Health Sciences Grand Rounds address, hosted virtually on April 20 by Weill Cornell Medicine.
