Weill Cornell Medicine’s Celebration of Diversity honored leaders who go beyond their official roles, dedicating time, energy and empathy to build inclusive environments. The ceremony, part of the institution’s seventh annual Diversity Week, was held April 7 in Griffis Faculty Club.

The program aims to cultivate scientists and physician-scientists who hail from groups traditionally underrepresented in science and medicine.

Weill Cornell Medicine honored a dozen faculty, trainees, students and staff April 25 for their outstanding service and leadership in promoting diversity at the academic medical institution.

When she was 5 years old, Reine Ibala and her family moved to the United States as refugees amid civil war in their native Republic of the Congo. Her father later developed hypertension and faced challenges as he navigated the U.S. health care system.

For the third year in a row, Weill Cornell Medicine has been awarded the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Health Professions Award by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
