A pioneer in reproductive endocrinology, Dr. Brij B. Saxena, the Harold and Percy Uris Professor of Reproductive Biology and professor of endocrinology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical College, passed away on July 30. Dr. Saxena, who joined the Medical College faculty in 1966, dedicated more than 45 years of service to Weill Cornell and discovery research.

Weill Cornell Medical College has received $49.6 million from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to fund its Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC). This Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) is a 5-year renewal of the largest Federal grant ever awarded to the Medical College by the NIH. In 2007, the first CTSA grant award supported the establishment of Weill Cornell's CTSC, a multi-institutional consortium in New York City with the goal of accelerating new patient preventive interventions and treatments through translational research.

As a man's waistline grows, so can his experience with sexual dysfunction and frequent urination, say researchers at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The study, published in the August issue of the British Journal of Urology International (BJUI), is the first to comprehensively show that obesity in men affects not just their hearts and metabolism, but also their sexual and urinary health.

It was just a little more than a year ago when cameras began following Weill Cornell Medical College faculty and their patients at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center to view the world of medicine through a raw, real and intimate lens.

Standing before the faculty of the Department of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, three Qatari high school students outlined all they had accomplished over the last two weeks: differentiating cell types, culturing cell lines, performing a DNA restriction digest and transfecting cells with a reporter gene -- among a half-dozen other scientific and laboratory techniques.

There is a critical need to find cures for incurable pediatric brain tumors through accelerated and focused research. That's why Miles for Hope (MFH) is hosting its Moving Towards a Cure® 5K Brain Tumor Awareness Run/Walk at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Riverside Park in New York City. Dean Laurie H. Glimcher speaks with Dr. Michael Stewart, an ear, nose and throat clinician who has just been appointed vice dean of Weill Cornell. In this newly established position, Dr. Stewart will work to enhance the academic and clinical missions of the Medical College.

Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College were awarded a $6.5 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for a five-year investigation into metabolic changes occurring within airway epithelial cells in the lungs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients caused by cigarette smoking. In addition, researchers aim to identify which cigarette smokers are at highest risk of developing COPD as well as novel biomarkers to assist in the development of new therapeutic treatments for the disease.

The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) has announced the election of John P. Leonard, MD, as the chairman of its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). Dr. Leonard is the associate dean for clinical research at Weill Cornell Medical College, vice chairman for clinical research in the Department of Medicine, and the Richard T. Silver Distinguished Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology. He also serves as clinical director of the Weill Cornell Center for Lymphoma and Myeloma, attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and is associate director for Clinical Research of the Weill Cornell Cancer Center.
