Bob Braude Retires as Loeb Librarian

Robert Braude, Ph.D., who has retired as the Frances and John Loeb Librarian and assistant dean for information resources at Weill Cornell Medical College, was honored at a retirement reception on Oct. 22.

Dr. Braude's significant accomplishments during his 15 years at the Medical College, said Dean Antonio Gotto, included a doubling of the Library's faculty-level staff; the inauguration of the Library's high-tech C.V. Starr Biomedical Information Center; the "four corners" consortium pooling the Library resources of Weill Cornell, The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Hospital for Special Surgery; and the technological transformation of the Library in the new age of electronic information. In his capacity as head of the Library, Dr. Braude also oversaw the operations of the Medical Center Archives and the Biomedical Communications Department.

Dr. Braude receives a retirement gift from the Library staff, presented by Carolyn Reid, associate director of Weill Cornell's Medical Library.


Joining Weill Cornell in honoring Dr. Braude at the reception were Betsy Humphreys, associate director for library operations at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), which is part of the NIH, and William Self, director of the Medical Library Center of New York, who represented the New York/New Jersey Chapter of the Medical Library Association. Mr. Self presented Dr. Braude with the Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his professional accomplishments and service to the oganization. Dr. Braude's activities on behalf of the National Library of Medicine have included leadership positions for a number of advisory and long-range planning committees and panels.

Dr. Braude joined the Medical College in 1986, when he was appointed the first Frances and John Loeb Librarian and assistant dean for information resources. He had previously held the positions of director of the medical library at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and director of the medical library at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He holds an M.L.S. from UCLA and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.

Dr. Braude and his wife, Sharon, have a home in Grass Valley, Calif. In retirement, he looks forward to spending more time with his parents and his grandchildren.
