This year's national residency "Match" was a successful one for Weill Cornell Medical College seniors. "We feel that we had an excellent match this year," said Dr. Carol Storey-Johnson, senior associate dean for education and host of Weill Cornell's "match" event. "Within the class of 2003, 54 percent of the students who matched to PGY1 and PGY2 slots obtained positions at the most prestigious institutions in the country."

"Match Day," which was held on March 20 in Archbold Commons, matches students from medical schools around the country. Of the 98 graduating Weill Medical College students, 16 will remain at NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center; three students will return to Weill Cornell for their PGY2 after completing their preliminary work elsewhere. Five percent obtained PGY1 positions in one of our affiliated Network institutions.

Almost half (45 percent) of the students will receive training in disciplines traditionally associated with primary-care careers: internal medicine (34 percent), primary-care medicine (1 percent) and pediatrics (10 percent). In addition, 23 percent of the class successfully matched in the very competitive subspecialties of neurology, neurological surgery, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, radiology and dermatology.

Nearly half (42 percent) of the class obtained PGY1 positions in the New York City metropolitan area, and 75 percent will remain in the Northeast.
