The Department of Surgery has undergone an exciting organizational change. At a reception held Oct. 21 at the Griffis Faculty Club, new surgical faculty were introduced.

Dr. William Stubenbord, professor of surgery and chief of the department's Division of Transplantation, has been named acting chairman of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Stubenbord received his medical degree from Cornell in 1962, completed his residency at The New York Hospital, and has held faculty appointments since 1967. In addition to becoming professor of surgery in 1990, Dr. Stubenbord became chief of the Division of Transplantation in the Department of Surgery in July 1996. He is also the long-standing surgical director of the Rogosin Institute David D. Thompson Transplantation Center of NewYork Weill Cornell.

Dr. Stubenbord succeeds Dr. John Daly, who chaired the Department from 1993 to 2002. Dr. Daly has accepted the position of dean of Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Daly, a native of Philadelphia and graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine, is an internationally renowned surgeon.

During this academic year, several new faculty members have joined the Department of Surgery, including Dr. Daniel Clair, adjunct assistant professor of surgery, who has joined the newly combined Division of Vascular Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital; DeeAnn Davidson, A.C.N.P., staff associate in surgery, who will be working under the tutelage of Dr. Jeffrey Milsom, chief of the section of colon and rectal surgery; and Dr. Peter Faries, assistant professor of surgery, who joined the department in September as chief of endovascular surgery, both at the Weill Cornell and Columbia Presbyterian campuses.

In addition, the Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome three new surgeons who have been appointed for a one-year term: Dr. Swati Kulkarni, instructor in surgery; Dr. James McGinty, instructor in surgery in the minimal-access surgery center; and Dr. Joseph Turkowski, instructor in surgery in the Burn Center.

Dr. K. Craig Kent, chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, and Drs. Faries and Clair gave an in-depth overview of the Columbia Presbyterian-Weill Cornell expansion of the Division of Vascular Surgery.

The evening was well-attended by physicians and administrators of Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The Department of Surgery hosts "Welcome New Faculty" receptions in mid-October every year.
