
Dr. Frederick Martens
Dr. Frederick Martens, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology, died Oct. 15. He was 77.
A renowned gynecologist, teacher and attending gynecologist at NewYork Weill Cornell, Dr. Martens entered the Medical College as a student in 1953, and except for a year's internship at Brooklyn Hospital, was affiliated with Cornell until his death.
Dr. Martens won the loyalty and gratitude of many patients as he built a premier practice that flourished for 39 years. He cared for generations of women, including many celebrities.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Martens received his Master of Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. in 1949 and his Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University Medical College in 1957.
Dr. Martens was also a yachtsman with a tremendous love for the sea. He had a large sailboat that he and his family would often enjoy. He rose through the ranks within the Larchmont Yacht Club in New York from fleet doctor to the highly respected position of commodore.
Dr. Martens, who was a vestryman of St. Bartholomew's Church, is survived by his wife, Joan, two children, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held for Dr. Martens at St. Bartholomew's Church on Oct. 21. For those who could not attend the memorial service, a gathering for family and friends was held at the Griffis Faculty Club on Oct. 21, at 3:30 p.m. Also in his honor, a special reception for Dr. Martens, hosted by Dr. Frank Chervenak, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was held on March 11, at the Griffis Faculty Club, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
