Dr. Cynthia Pfeffer, professor of psychiatry, has been named to receive the Mortimer J. Blumenthal Memorial Award from the UJA Federation of New York's Mental Health Professionals Division, at the organization's annual reception on March 8 in New York City. The award recognizes Dr. Pfeffer's exceptional work in clinical and research work with suicidal children and adolescents, and childhood bereavement.
Dr. Joseph Fins, chief of the Division of Medical Ethics, will assume his position as governor of the New York Downstate Region I of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists, during the ACP's annual scientific meeting in San Diego, April 19-21. ACP Governors are elected by local ACP members and serve four-year terms. Working with a local council, they supervise ACP chapter activities, appoint members to local committees, and preside at regional meetings. They also represent members by serving on the ACP Board of Governors. The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States.
Dr. Davise Larone, professor of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine and professor of clinical microbiology and immunology, has been reappointed for a three-year term as the Standards and Examination Chair of the Mycology Section of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM). The ABMM was established in 1959 under the auspices of the American Academy of Microbiology to test the expertise of microbiologists seeking to direct public health or clinical microbiology laboratories.
Dr. Ehud Lavi, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was elected to the board of directors of the International Society of Neurovirology and joined the editorial board of the Journal of Neurovirology.
Dr. Robert Leahy, clinical professor of psychology in psychiatry, has accepted the nomination to run for the presidency of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. "It is my hope to run for this office and to represent the interests of all members of the cognitive-behavior therapy community," he said. Dr. Leahy also serves as president of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.
Dr. William Muller, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was appointed to the editorial committee of the Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease, a new publication of the prestigious "Annual Reviews" series of publications. He continues to serve as editor of the Journal of Experimental Medicine. In addition, he was appointed to the editorial board of Cell Communication and Adhesion.
Dr. Jean Pape, professor of medicine, will be awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Global Health Education Consortium at its 16th annual conference on Feb. 15-17 in Santo Domingo. The award is given for outstanding and dedicated leadership in expanding and enhancing the education of physicians in the field of global health. Dr. Pape is the founder of Haiti's GHESKIO (Groupe Haitien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi and des Infections Opportunistes), which has championed education, health care and HIV research, and which has worked closely with Weill Cornell since its inception in 1982. Dr. Pape will also have the honor of delivering the GHEC's keynote speech, "Impact of Research on Public Health: Example of the GHESKIO Centers in Haiti."
Dr. Ellinor Peerschke, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was installed as president of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists in June at the Society's annual meeting in Chicago.

Dr. Michael Rubin, professor of clinical neurology and director of the neuromuscular service and EMG laboratory at Weill Cornell, and Dr. Joseph Safdieh, assistant professor of neurology, will be publishing their book, "Netter's Concise Neuroanatomy" (Saunders, 2007), due out on March 23. The book contains 260 illustrations (250 in full color) and provides rich visual guidance on all aspects of neuroanatomy by master medical illustrator Dr. Frank H. Netter. It can be used as both an adjunct to existing undergraduate, medical, and allied health neuroanatomy textbooks or monographs, as well as a stand-alone neuroanatomy text, particularly at the student level.
Dr. Pengbo Zhou, associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was invited to become a charter member of the Molecular Oncogenesis Study Section at the National Institutes of Health.
