For the past five years, Manhattan Media—the publishers of several community newspapers including Our Town on the Upper East Side—has given out the Blackboard Awards, which honor New York City's best schools and teachers.

Each year, Weill Cornell sponsors one outstanding school and this year the College presented the award for Outstanding Religious Middle School to Cornelia Connelly Middle School of the Holy Child. Cornelia Connelly provides students from low-income families on the Lower East Side with the small classes and individual attention of private schools for about $55 a month.

On behalf of the College, Dr. Randi Silver, associate dean of the Weill Cornell Graduate School, donated a microscope to support the school's science program. "The particular middle school that we are honoring tonight is filling a very important void," Dr. Silver said. "We are very happy to be able to help the school fulfill their mission."
