Sheila Zimmet, J.D., R.N., has been appointed associate dean for research compliance at Weill Cornell. Zimmet will be responsible for institutional compliance related to human-subject research, animal care and use, biosafety, and the monitoring and managing of conflicts of interest of faculty and staff. She will also oversee the education and training of the Weill Cornell research community in the responsible conduct of research.
Zimmet previously served as director of research assurance and compliance at Georgetown University, a position she held for more than 20 years. She also served as Georgetown's senior counsel and is a member of numerous national committees, including the National Center for Research Resources advisory council at the National Institutes of Health.
After receiving her nursing degree from Georgetown University School of Nursing in 1971, Zimmet worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse at Georgetown University Hospital. She went on to pursue a career in law, with a focus on biomedical research issues. She received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1975.
