Dr. Wayne Isom, chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, was honored by the National Marfan Foundation at a gala benefit on Dec. 7. Dr. Isom has repaired many Marfan hearts, which often require surgery to repair or replace an enlarged aorta.

Dr. Maria New, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, received a singular honor from the the National Institutes of Health when she was invited to present the NIH's third Astute Clinician Lecture on Dec. 13. The NIH's Astute Clinician Lecture honors a U.S. scientist who has observed an unusual clinical occurrence, and, by investigating it, has opened an important new avenue of research. Dr. New is noted for her seminal discoveries and research on congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The title of her Astute Clinician Lecture at the NIH was "The Patients Who Taught Me and Led to My Discoveries in Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia." An internationally recognized endocrinologist, Dr. New was recently named to the Executive Committee of the International Congress of Endocrinology (ICE). Dr. New is the first woman to serve on the ICE's Executive Committee, and also the first committee member nominated by another country's endocrinological society.
