Dr. Robert A. Harrington, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine, was recently honored with two awards recognizing his career and leadership achievements.

Dr. Harrington received the TCT 2024 Career Achievement Award during the Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics symposium, which took place Oct. 27-30 in Washington, D.C. The foundation bestows the award on an outstanding individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of interventional cardiology and made a transformative impact on cardiovascular care through clinical excellence, pioneering research and mentorship.

In addition, Dr. Harrington will receive the American Heart Association’s 2024 Chairman’s Award during its Scientific Sessions 2024 meeting, scheduled for Nov. 16-18 in Chicago, which celebrates the association’s centennial year. The award honors medical and science professionals who are leaders in the field and whose contributions have furthered the association’s strategic goals at the national and local levels. The award recognizes Dr. Harrington’s decades of service and leadership to the association, his accomplishments during his term as its 84th volunteer president in 2019-2020 including the start of COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his work as chair of Scientific Sessions for two years.

“I am incredibly thrilled and humbled to receive these prestigious awards,” said Dr. Harrington, who is also provost for medical affairs of Cornell University. “I’ve dedicated my career to advancing the field of cardiology through research and technological innovation that seeks to improve access to care for all. It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized for these efforts, and I hope I can live up to the stature of the people who came before me.”

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Harrington evaluates antithrombotic therapies to treat acute ischemic heart disease and minimize the acute complications of percutaneous coronary procedures. He also works to better understand and improve the methodology of clinical research, such as the utility of technology to facilitate clinical trials. He has authored more than 760 peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, book chapters and editorials to advance the scientific and medical understanding of the field. He is also a devoted mentor, inspiring and supporting the next generation of physicians and scientists.

He previously received the American Heart Association’s 2017 Clinical Research Prize, the 2020 National Distinguished Leadership Award and the 2024 Gold Heart Award. He also continues to serve on the association’s National Board of Directors.
