As an artist in New York’s fashion industry, Osmani Garcia marveled at the power of creativity and innovation. But after being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, it would be the pioneering research advances at Weill Cornell Medicine, which greatly improved the course of his disease, that he would truly cherish.
As one of the first HIV research units in the country, the Weill Cornell HIV Clinical Trials Unit remains at the forefront of therapeutic advancements in the treatment of the disease, which have helped to extend the life expectancy of HIV patients to match that of non-HIV patients.
"Recently we have been involved with HIV prevention," said Dr. Roy Gulick, the Rochelle Belfer Professor in Medicine, who has treated Garcia since 1998. "One powerful tool we’ve been working with is PREP, Pre-Exposure Prophylactic, which could help patients avoid infection if they came in contact with HIV."
Thanks to Weill Cornell Medicine and physicians like Dr. Gulick, Garcia remains optimistic about his condition. "HIV doesn’t affect me in my everyday life, because I have managed to make it just a part of me," he said.
