Dr. R.V. Paul Chan, the St. Giles Associate Professor of Pediatric Retina, associate professor of ophthalmology, associate attending ophthalmologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and division chief of Ophthalmology at New York Downtown Hospital, was appointed to the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ethics Committee in June and honorary member of the Thai Retina Society in May. Dr. Chan was also the international coordinator (surgical retina) for the 28th Congress of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting hosted in Hyderebad, India in May. Additionally, he was program committee member at the World ROP Congress III hosted in Shanghai, China in April and appointed as a member of the ALCON: China Phaco Development Advisory Board that same month.
Dr. Robin Davisson, the Andrew Dickson White Professor of Molecular Physiology, will deliver the 2012 Arthur C. Corcoran Memorial Lecture at the American Heart Association's Council for High Blood Pressure Research on Sept. 20. This prestigious lecture, established in 1977 to honor Arthur C. Corcoran for his contributions to hypertension research, is presented at the annual meeting of this Council by a distinguished honoree from the field of hypertension.
Dr. Anna-Maria Demetriades, assistant professor of ophthalmology, was awarded the Fight for Sight Grant-in-Aid 2012 for "Muller Glia Cell-Mediated Neuroprotection for the Treatment of Glaucoma." Fight for Sight has supported and inspired eye and vision research by providing initial funds to promising scientists early in their careers.
Dr. Leila Rafla-Demetrious, assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology, was appointed to Women's Voices for Change's Medical Advisory Board. Women's Voices for Change is a nonprofit organization for which nearly 30 doctors, nutritionists and other health experts contribute to a website and blog that focuses on all aspects of the menopause transition. Dr. Rafla-Demetrious has published several articles for the website.
Dr. Maura D. Frank, assistant professor of clinical pediatrics, and the Healthy Schools Healthy Families Program — East she medically directs were recently awarded a $25,000 prestigious innovation in physical activity programming award at the Active Schools Acceleration Project competition hosted in Washington, D.C. in July. The initiative was started by Tufts University and has been promoted by First Lady Michelle Obama.
Dr. Lindsey Green, chief resident at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center for 2011-12, had her abstract on ITP accepted at the European Hematology Association meeting June 14-17 in Amsterdam, for which she also received a research award and travel grant.
Dr. Katherine A. Hajjar, chair of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, the Brine Family Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, professor of cell and developmental biology, professor of pediatrics and professor of pediatrics in medicine, received the 2012 Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring in the Weill Cornell Medical College Graduate School of Medical Sciences May 30.
Dr. James Horowitz, chief resident of internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, was awarded the Chief Resident of the Year Award during the Internal Medicine Residency program's graduation dinner June 7. This newly-created award will now be called the James Horowitz Chief Resident of the Year Award.
Dr. Thanakorn Jirasevijinda, associate professor of pediatrics (education), has been invited to serve as chair of the Scientific Committee for the American Academy of Communication in Health 2012 Research & Teaching Forum in August. The Academy's forum is a conference for researchers, medical educators, clinicians and others interested in healthcare communication. Additionally, Dr. Jirasevijinda was appointed director of the Education Innovation for the New York Academy of Medicine Section on Evidence Based Practice.
Dr. Gary J. Lelli, assistant professor of ophthalmology, was appointed to the Orbital Disease Education and Research Foundation's Board of Directors. The Foundation, based in New York, sponsors clinical and laboratory education and research for physicians undertaking training in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases which affect the bones and tissues surrounding the eye.
Dr. David C. Lyden, the Stavros S. Niarchos Associate Professor in Pediatric Cardiology, associate professor of pediatrics and associate professor of cell and developmental biology, will receive the University of Vermont Graduate and Medical School Alumni Award in October.
Dr. Neel Mehta, assistant professor of anesthesiology, received the "Teacher of the Year" award for the Tri-Institutional Interventional Pain Fellowship last month.
Dr. Marcus Reidenberg, professor of pharmacology, professor of public health and professor of medicine, was appointed to a three-year term on the Awards Committee of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
Dr. Dikoma Shungu, professor of physics in radiology, was recognized by the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine for distinguished service to the Society during 2010-2011 and named a Distinguished Reviewer for the year 2012 by its journal Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
Dr. Richard Silver, professor of medicine, is the principal investigator and chair of the Membership Committee for the National Institutes of Health's Myeloproliferative Disorders - Research Consortium. Myelofibrosis is a disorder of the bone marrow, in which the marrow is replaced by scar tissue, which in turn causes anemia.
Dr. Christopher Starr, assistant professor of ophthalmology, was appointed to the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery's Corneal Clinical Committee and its Cornea Subspecialty Day Planning Committee for the 2012 national meeting hosted April 20-24 in Chicago. In addition, The Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery Fellowship program was honored with accreditation by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Fellowship Compliance Committee.
Dr. Susan J. Vannucci, research professor of neuroscience in pediatrics, presented "Hypoxic-ischemic injury to the immature brain: Do mast cells play a role?" at the eighth Hershey Conference on Developmental Brain Injury hosted in England in June. This National Institutes of Health-funded biannual international meeting was founded by Drs. Susan and Robert Vannucci in 1997.
Dr. Harel Weinstein, chairman of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, director of the Institute for Computational Biomedicine and the Maxwell M Upson Professor of Physiology and Biophysics was elected July 1 to the Science Policy Committee of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology for a three-year term. The Federation is the nation's largest coalition of biomedical researchers and is recognized as the policy voice of biological and biomedical researchers.
Dr. Kaleb Yohay, assistant professor of pediatrics, will receive the Children's Humanitarian Award from the Children's Tumor Foundation for his work in neurofibromatosis. He will accept the award at the Foundation's meeting in November.
