Siegel Family Faculty and Student Awards Announced

Dr. Charles L. Bardes

Dr. Charles L. Bardes, associate dean of admissions and professor of clinical medicine, has been chosen as the 2011 Siegel Family Faculty Award recipient.

The Siegel Family Faculty Award, made possible through an endowed gift from Overseer Herbert J. Siegel and his wife, Jeanne, recognizes a Medical College faculty member who demonstrates pedagogical excellence, outstanding scientific achievement, and a record of dedicated educational service to Weill Cornell. The Siegel Family Faculty Award Selection Committee helped choose Dr. Bardes as the leading faculty member who exemplifies these qualities.

Dr. Bardes, a much-admired faculty member and physician, has served Weill Cornell for many years and left his mark on generations of young doctors graduating from the Medical College. His many appointments at Weill Cornell include professor of clinical medicine and associate dean of admissions since 1999. He also has directed the medicine clerkship since 1995.

Dr. Bardes graduated summa cum laude from Princeton in 1978 and from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1986. He completed his internal medicine residency training at The New York Hospital in 1989. In addition to numerous awards for teaching and clinical care, he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha and a fellow of both The American College of Physicians and the New York Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Bardes practices general internal medicine and his special interests include primary and preventive care, emphasizing a unified approach to the whole person. His medical education articles have been published in the journals Academic Medicine, Medical Education, and Teaching and Learning in Medicine, while his literary essays have appeared in "Agni," "Literary Imagination," and the anthology "Becoming a Doctor."

Dr. Bardes' book "Essential Skills in Clinical Medicine" is a guide for students and interns, while "Pale Faces: The Masks of Anemia" is an extended essay on the cultural and mythological layers of a common disease state.

The Siegel Family Student Prize supports eight student recipients equally, two from each class year at the Medical College.
