Symposium and Concert Map the Intersection of Medicine and Music

music and medicine initiative

Weill Cornell Medical College and Dean Antonio M. Gotto Jr., through the Medical College's Music and Medicine Initiative, are hosting a symposium on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Uris Auditorium to discuss the therapeutic role music can play in medicine, and the many other intersections between music and medicine.

The symposium is part of a collaboration the Medical College has established with the German medical schools Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich (LUM) and Technische University Munich (TMU).

The following evening, at Carnegie Hall at 8 p.m., L'Ensemble Médical, a 200-member orchestra and choir comprising mainly medical students, professors and physicians of LUM and TMU, will perform Bach's epic Mass in B Minor. The performance is part of an international tour that will take L'Ensemble Médical to Boston and Washington, D.C., as well as New York.

L'Ensemble Médical combines in an innovative concept: music, science and charity. When L'Ensemble Médical performs in collaboration with a medical school, such as its performance here in New York, a special emphasis is given to the accompanying scientific symposia. The intertwining of music and medicine is debated and discussed among students and physicians, and then the music itself is performed also by students and musicians.

The proceeds from the Carnegie Hall performance will go toward Doctors Without Borders and their ongoing work in Haiti.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to not only hear a beautiful piece of music, but to also discuss the relationship between music and medicine," said Dr. David Shapiro, Weill Cornell Medical College overseer and chairman of the Medical College's Music and Medicine Initiative.

Weill Cornell's Music and Medicine Initiative was founded two years ago as a partnership between Weill Cornell and The Juilliard School. The initiative, which is one of the nation's only formal music and medicine programs, explores the relationship between music and medicine and provides opportunities for collaboration between each school's students.
