Brooklyn bus driver Pete Pizzuti was the first patient to receive a liver transplant through NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell's newly established Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation. The life-saving procedure was led by Dr. Daniel Cherqui, who was recently appointed professor of surgery and chief of a newly created section of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation, and performed together with Dr. Michael Kluger and the Weill Cornell transplant team. A Daily News story about the milestone surgery reported that Mr. Pizzuti "thanked the doctors, nurses and even the hospital parking attendant during his first post-transplant checkup last week."
