Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, the Lewis Atterbury Stimson Professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery, has been elected president of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), the premier professional organization for surgeons and health care providers dedicated to advancing and promoting the science and treatment of cancer. An internationally recognized expert in the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, Dr. Michelassi is an authority in the genetics of gastrointestinal cancer, and has developed a bowel-saving strictureplasty procedure for the treatment of Crohn's disease. The Society includes more than 2,000 members.
