Since its founding more than 25 years ago, GHESKIO (Groupe Haitien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi et des Infections Opportunistes, or the Haitian Group for the Study of Kaposi's Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections) has brought hope and healing to a nation deeply scarred by AIDS and other deadly diseases. This is due in large measure to the leadership of Dr. Jean Pape, professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and Dr. Warren Johnson, the B.H. Kean Professor of Tropical Medicine and chief of International Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Medical College.

This month, the organization will bolster its mission of patient treatment and clinical training by naming its facility in Haiti for Dr. Johnson, a compassionate physician who has dedicated his career to international medicine and the study of infectious diseases. In a special ceremony on February 10, the facility will be formally named the Warren D. Johnson Jr. Medical Center and the Laboratories Rodolphe Merieux, part of GHESKIO's new Institute of Infectious Diseases and Reproductive Heath.

Along with Dr. Johnson and his wife, Barbara, several Weill Cornell faculty members will be in attendance, including Dr. Andrew I. Schafer, chairman of the Department of Medicine.

Several Haitian dignitaries will also be at naming ceremony, including Michele Duvivier Pierre-Louis, prime minister of Haiti.
