The NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center Alumni Council, the collegial association for health care professionals at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, honored Dr. Roy Silverstein with its 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award at an annual dinner held Nov. 13, 2008, in Griffis Faculty Club. The honor, first presented in 1982 and currently awarded every two years, is given to a physician who has worked at least two years as a house officer or faculty member at Weill Cornell, has developed a noteworthy career at another institution, and is a graduate of a medical school other than Weill Cornell Medical College.Â
Dr. Silverstein's distinguished titles include chairman of the department of cell biology and vice chairman of the Lerner Research Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He is also director of the NIH-funded Cleveland Clinic Specialized Center of Clinically Oriented Research (SCCOR) in Thrombosis. Dr. Silverstein received his undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University and his medical degree from Emory University. After completing clinical training in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology at New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center (now NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center) he joined the faculty at the Medical College, where he spent nearly 20 years, rising through the ranks to professor of medicine and chair of the Division of Hematology/Oncology. He joined the Cleveland Clinic in 2004.
Distinguished Housestaff Awards were also presented to 22 recipients this year. The award is presented annually to a resident or member of the housestaff from each department who has been nominated by their department chair for all-around excellence. They are:
