As its transformation from a garage for luxury cars to an office of world-class scientists continues, the ceremonial final steel beam at 407 E. 61st St. was hoisted into place April 23.
Representatives from Weill Cornell Medical College's capital planning and development offices gathered to sign the final beam — as did construction workers who have been renovating the building — before a crane lifted it into place.
The former Rolls Royce Garage will soon be the home to a portion of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience faculty and staff, as well as Department of Surgery staff and other administrative offices. Dr. Costantino Iadecola's neurobiology research group, currently dispersed among several floors at the Kips Bay Building at 411 E. 69th St., will also be relocated here.
Project Manager Frank Kubicek said workers have completed the excavation phase of the project and have begun installing the steel structure. The building should be completed this fall year and ready for occupation by January 2009.
