Awards and Honors

Dr. Sibel Klimstra, associate professor of clinical psychiatry, has been named the 2008 Educator of the Year by the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP). Dr. Klimstra was presented with the award at the AAGP Annual Meeting's Presidential Plenary and Awards Dinner on March 14 in Orlando. Board-certified in psychiatry and neurology (geriatric psychiatry), Dr. Klimstra also serves as director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Residency Training Program and associate vice chair for education at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Westchester Division. The award recognizes Dr. Klimstra's accomplishments and excellence in teaching, mentoring and career development of students and faculty; curriculum and program development; and leadership in geriatric psychiatry education. "Receiving the 2008 Educator of the Year Award is a great honor for me, and I consider it a privilege to help educate the next generation of geriatric psychiatrists," Dr. Klimstra said. "I am very fortunate to have such a rewarding job at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, where physician educators are valued and encouraged. I am also grateful for the mentorship of Dr. George Alexopoulos, the collegiality and support of our faculty, and the dedication, scholarship and clinical excellence of all our residents and students."

Dr. Francis Lee, associate professor of psychiatry and pharmacology, is one of 13 translational researchers chosen as the recipient of the 2008 Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The awards provide $150,000 per year over five years ($750,000) to support established, independent physician-scientists who are dedicated to translational research — the two-way transfer between laboratory research and patient treatment — and mentoring physician-scientist trainees. The highly competitive award has made a total of 93 awards since its inception in 1997. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is an independent, private foundation dedicated to advancing the medical sciences by supporting research and other scientific and educational activities.

Dr. Alan Manevitz, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry, will be honored by the Riverdale Mental Health Association at its 49th Annual Gala Journal on May 15 at the Water Club in New York. The award recognizes Dr. Manevitz's lifetime of service in the mental health field.

Dr. Marcus Reidenberg, professor of pharmacology, public health and medicine, was selected by the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) to receive the 2008 Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics at its annual meeting on April 5 in Orlando, Fla. The award honors individual scientists for outstanding lifetime contributions to clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. Dr. Reidenberg will also present a lecture entitled "From Adverse Drug Reactions to Drug Disposition to WHO and Essential Medicines to Our Discipline of Clinical Pharmacology." (Dr. Reidenberg has served on the World Health Organization's Expert Panel and Expert Advisory Committee on Essential Medicines since 1989.) He has contributed to ASCPT in a number of leadership roles throughout his 40 years of membership, most notably as its president in 1984 and as editor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the official journal of the ASCPT, from 1985 through 2001. He was also the recipient of the ASCPT Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award in 1981 and the Henry W. Elliott Distinguished Service Award in 1999.
