Awards and Honors


Dr. Stanley H. Appel, professor of neurology and chair of neurology and co-founder of the Methodist Neurological Institute (NI), is a recipient of a 2007 Museum District Business Alliance (MDBA) Community Improvement Award. Dr. Appel is director of the MDA/ALS Clinical Center at the Methodist NI, one of the first multi-disciplinary ALS clinics in the nation and a model for all MDA-sponsored ALS clinics in the U.S.

Dr. Paul Miskovitz, clinical professor of medicine, presented "Overview of Inflammatory Bowel Disease 2007" at the Northeast Region Wound Ostomy Continence (NERWOCN) Regional Conference on Oct. 13 in Tarrytown, N.Y. Hosted by the Metro NY Afflilate WOCN, this year's conference theme was entitled "Awakening Our Power: Transcending Barriers to Evidence-Based Practice."

Dr. Susan Pannullo, assistant professor of neurological surgery, will be serving as co-chair and featured panelist at the Brain Tumor Awareness Day Symposium, Nov. 11, at the NYU Medical Center. On Dec. 14, Dr. Pannullo will also help lead the Regional Conference of Women in Neurosurgery, of which she currently serves as president, in New York City.

Dr. Marcus Reidenberg, professor of pharmacology, medicine and public health, chaired a special meeting of the World Health Organization Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines on the topic of essential medicines for infants and children, at W.H.O. headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Oct. 25-26, 2007. He also chaired a small workshop there a day earlier to discuss research needs for improving the availability of medicines for these young patients and suggesting a priority ranking for their research needs.

Dr. David Rosenfield, professor of neurology and director of the speech and language center at the Methodist Neurological Institute, has been named a member of the University of Houston Department of Communication Disorders Community Advisory Board. This board is affiliated with the United Way Advisory Board for the University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, a United Way Facility.
