Otha W. Linton, M.S.J., will present the final Heberden Society Lecture of the 2006-2007 academic year on Thursday, May 10, at 5 p.m. in Uris Faculty Room (A-126) at 1300 York Ave. The title of his lecture will be "Radiology at New York Hospital and Cornell University Medical College: Telling It Like It Was."
Mr. Linton, who holds a Master of Science degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, retired in 1997 after 35 years as associate executive director of the American College of Radiology; he currently serves as executive director of the International Society of Radiology. In 1995, he also served as executive director of Radiology Centennial Inc., a not-for-profit organization that was created by numerous scientific societies and commercial companies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the X-ray and to celebrate a century of achievement in radiation science.
In recent years, Mr. Linton has authored numerous books that detail the history of radiology at various institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania (1999), Massachusetts General Hospital (2001), Brigham and Women's Hospital (2003), University of California, San Francisco (2004), Stanford University (2005) and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (2007). He is now completing a history of radiology at The New York Hospital and Cornell University Medical College that will be published in the near future.
The Heberden Society was established at the Medical Center in 1975 by a group of medical interns and residents who were interested in promoting the history of medicine. The society sponsors three lectures during each academic year. The society is named after Sir William Heberden the younger (1767-1845), who served as physician to King George III of England in his last days. King George III was the sovereign who granted the charter for The New York Hospital in 1771.
