Dr. Joseph Fins, chief of the Division of Medical Ethics and professor of medicine, public health, and medicine in psychiatry, has been elected to the position as governor of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Fins, who is currently governor-elect, will assume office in April 2007. The American College of Physicians (ACP) is the nation's largest medical specialty society. Its mission is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine. There are currently 119,000 members, including medical students.
Dr. Linda Vahdat, the Madeline and Stephen Anbinder Clinical Scholar in Hematology/Oncology and associate professor of clinical medicine, has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Komen Breast Cancer foundation for her Phase II study on reducing the ability of dormant cancer cells to "switch" back on after treatment or remission. The highly competitive award (only 5 percent of all applicants are granted) supports Dr. Vahdat's research into treating patients with moderate to high risk of relapse. The Komen Foundation Award and Research Program provides support for cutting-edge research that might not be funded elsewhere. It remains the world's largest private source of funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
