In November, Weill Cornell celebrated the formal opening of a new research facility - the Friedman Family Foundation Pediatric Research Laboratories - located on the sixth floor of the Hamad bin Khalifa Biomedical Research Building ("S" Building).

The research laboratories and offices are a gift of Barbara and Stephen Friedman. Ms. Friedman is vice chairman of the Medical College's Board of Overseers and a member of the Joint Advisory Board of the Medical College in Qatar.

When fully staffed, 75 researchers will occupy the 6,500-square-foot Friedman labs. Their work will focus on new approaches for the treatment of genetic disorders that affect growth and development in children, as well as the basis of infection, in four areas: pulmonology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, and critical care medicine.

Ms. Friedman was also named as first recipient of the Tanner Prize, an award given annually to recognize significant contributions to Jewish life at Cornell University and worldwide. The award, sponsored by the Cornell Hillel organization, is named after Harold Tanner, a Foremost Benefactor of Cornell University. Tanner will present the prize to Ms. Friedman at an honorary luncheon on April 21 at the Cornell Club in New York City.
