Anesthesiology Research Expo Debuts

The Department of Anesthesiology held its first-ever Research Expo at Weill Cornell Medical College on February 14 to 17, complete with a poster display and mixer. Faculty, staff and students gathered to learn more about the Department's latest studies, as well as meet face-to-face with the investigators.

"The idea of displaying posters presented at national and international meetings seems like an efficient way of informing everyone of recent research," said Dr. Hugh Hemmings, professor of anesthesiology and professor of pharmacology.
The expo also provided a venue for many clinical and research faculty to meet. "It is always nice to associate a face with the project," noted Dr. Hemmings.

It proved worthwhile for student researchers too. "The questions and comments I received were based more on clinical observations, as opposed to questions of basic science," said graduate student Jimcy Platholi. "This was very helpful for me being that I am interested in translational research." Ms. Platholi's research, "Regulation of a Protein Phosphotase-1I Complex in Global Cerebral Ischemia," was conducted with Dr. Hemmings and Dr. Lim Tung, an anesthesiology research associate at Weill Cornell.

The Department of Anesthesiology is encouraged by the positive feedback and success of the Research Expo, and plans to make it an annual event with an expanded oral session. "Our faculty got to see the diversity of research in the Department, and we were pleased to have so many students attend as well," said Dr. Hemmings.
The expo provided students with an opportunity to speak with Dr. Nikolaos Skubas, assistant professor of anesthesiology.
