Sir Paul Nurse engages a Weill Cornell audience, including Dr. David Hajjar, with his presentation on biological aspects of medicine.
Sir Paul Nurse, president of The Rockefeller University, delivered the Menard and Anna Gertler Visiting Professor in Medicine Lecture on June 29 at Weill Cornell Medical College. The lecture, entitled "The Great Ideas of Biology," was hosted by Dr. David Hajjar, dean of Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the Frank H.T. Rhodes Distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Biology and Genetics. A gifted lecturer, Sir Paul spoke about biological systems as they relate to disease processes.

The Gertler lectureship was supported by a gift from the Gertler family, who has given substantial unrestricted grants to Weill Cornell over the past five years toward basic and clinical science. Dr. Menard Gertler is a distinguished cardiologist who held faculty positions at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and New York University before joining the Medical College community in 1997 as clinical professor of medicine. He has published more than 100 articles in major medical journals and has made important contributions to the understanding of cardiac physiology.
Sir Paul, who received knighthood in Great Britain for his unique contributions to cell biology and cancer in 1999, was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Medicine. The former chief executive of Cancer Research UK, Sir Paul was installed as the ninth president of The Rockefeller University in September 2003.
