Dr. Andrew Dannenberg, the Henry R. Erle, M.D.-Roberts Family Professor of Medicine, professor of medicine in surgery, and co-director of the Cancer Prevention Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, served as co-chairman of the 95th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Orlando, on March 27-31. He also delivered one of the plenary addresses, speaking on "COX-2: A Molecular Target for Cancer Prevention and Treatment." The AACR conference is the oldest and largest oncology meeting that features the world's leaders in cancer research. An estimated 14,000 attended the meeting.
Dr. Kathleen Foley, professor of neurology and neuroscience and professor of clinical pharmacology, has been chosen as one of the 2004 McCann Scholars, an honor awarded to medical professionals for their outstanding mentorship in the field of medicine and science. Recipients receive a $150,000 no-strings-attached reward, funded by the Joy McCann Foundation, a family foundation that supports excellence in medical and nursing education and research and patient care.
Dr. David Nanus, associate professor of medicine and associate professor of urology, participated in a meeting of the New York State Roundtable on Prostate Cancer in Albany to discuss the new not-for-profit board, the New York State Coalition to Cure Prostate Cancer. The meeting included some of New York State's leading cancer experts and was co-hosted by Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Prostate Cancer Foundation founder Michael Milken. Legislation to pass the new board was approved on Feb. 23.
Dr. Herbert Pardes, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Markle Foundation. The Foundation works to accelerate the use of emerging information and communication technologies to address critical public needs, particularly in health care and national security. Dr. Pardes has also served as executive vice chair of the Markle Foundation's Connecting Health Steering Group.
