In what has become a much-anticipated annual event, Weill Cornell Medical College Board of Overseers and the Cornell University Board of Trustees convened in Uris Auditorium on Jan. 23 for their annual joint meeting, with the special theme of "Advances in the Care of Women and Children."

Sanford Weill, chair of Weill Cornell's Board of Overseers, and Peter Meinig, chair of the Cornell Board of Trustees, gave the opening remarks. Cornell University President Jeffrey Lehman delivered the "President's Report" and Dr. Antonio Gotto, provost for medical affairs and the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of the Medical College, gave the "Report of the Provost."

In his address, Dr. Gotto provided status reports on the Medical College's Strategic Plan I and II; the Tri-Institutional research programs; the Capital Campaign; and the "Weill Cornell: We Care" initiative. He stressed the importance of "sustaining and expanding one culture of intellectual collaboration" between Weill Cornell's New York and Qatar campuses as well as Cornell University's Ithaca setting. In addition, Dr. Gotto noted that at the heart of the Medical College's Strategic Plan Advancing the Clinical Mission is the construction of the new York Avenue Ambulatory Care Building, which will house physician practices and support groundbreaking clinical research and educational programs when it is completed. (Construction of the new structure, to be located on the southwest corner of York Avenue and 70th Street, will begin in late February.)
