
Dr. Victor Dzau
The Department of Medicine will host Medicine Grand Rounds with Dr. Victor Dzau as the 2003 Dr. Aaron Feder Visiting Professor, on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. in Uris Auditorium. Dr. Dzau will present a talk on "Heart Failure 2003 and Beyond: From Neurohormones to Stem Cells."
Dr. Victor Dzau is the 10th Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic (Medicine), established in 1791 at the Harvard Medical School. In addition, Dr. Dzau serves as chairman of the Department of Medicine, physician-in-chief, and director of research at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was also recently appointed as the director of academic collaborations for Partners HealthCare System.
Dr. Dzau's academic interests are in cardiovascular translational research and in mission-based education. In the research arena, his laboratory has studied the molecular and genetic mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, and has applied genomic and gene transfer technologies to develop novel therapeutic approaches. Recently, he developed a genetically modified coronary bypass graft that is currently in clinical trial. In the education arena, Dr. Dzau is committed to developing mission-based education for medical trainees. In collaboration with his program directors at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Dzau has championed innovative programs to develop physician-scientists, educators, humanists and physician leaders. He is a strong advocate of innovative approaches to medical education.
Dr. Dzau is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the prestigious 2001 Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine and the Swedish Cardiology Society, as well as the 2001 Novartis Award for Hypertension Research of the American Heart Association. In addition, Dr. Dzau was awarded the 2002 Astra Zeneca Award from the International Society for Hypertension, and most recently, he was honored by the European Academy of Science and Arts with the Kurt Polzer Prize in Biomedical Science (2003).
Established by a gift to Cornell University Medical College in 1973, the Dr. Aaron Feder Visiting Professorship of Medicine honors the late Dr. Feder (1915-1985), who was a distinguished member of the faculty in the Department of Medicine for more than 40 years.
