Dr. David Abramson, clinical professor of ophthalmology and director of the Robert M. Ellsworth Ophthalmic Oncology Center at Weill Cornell, delivered the 5th Annual Philip P. Ellis Lecture on Sept. 19, at the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute of the University of Colorado School of Medicine (Denver), on "Second Malignancies in Retinoblastoma: The Impact of Genes and Environment."

Dr. Richard Cohen, clinical professor of medicine, was honored by Weill Cornell medical students and faculty as the outstanding teacher of "Medicine, Patients and Society 3," a course for third- and fourth-year medical students that covers medical ethics and end-of-life issues.

Dr. Owen Davis, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and associate professor of reproductive medicine, has been elected president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). In addition, Dr. Davis has been named the first medical director of The American Infertility Association (AIA).

Dr. Bernice Grafstein, the Vincent and Brooke Astor Distinguished Professor in Neuroscience and professor of physiology and biophysics, is the recipient of the prestigious Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award by Women in Neuroscience. As Women in Neuroscience notes in its prize citation: "Dr Grafstein, a leader in the field of regeneration research, was elected president of the Society for Neuroscience in 1985-1986 and was the first woman to serve as the society's president. She is also a life trustee, and current treasurer, of the Grass Foundation. The Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award, awarded to a living recipient, honors an individual with outstanding career achievements in neuroscience who has also significantly promoted the professional advancement of women within the field." The award was presented in conjunction with the upcoming 2003 Society for Neuroscience Meeting, the major annual event for the neurosciences.

Dr. Claudia Henschke, professor of radiology, won first place in the American Medical Writers Association's Book Awards for "Lung Cancer: Myths, Facts, Choices—and Hope" (W.W. Norton & Company).

Dr. David Lyden, assistant professor of pediatrics, was honored at Brown University's "The President's House" (Rhode Island) on Nov. 10, in celebration of his "outstanding and scientific accomplishments" in cancer biology, particularly involving tumor angiogenesis.

Dr. Carl Nathan, the R.A. Rees Pritchett Professor of Microbiology, professor of microbiology & immunology and medicine, and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, has been named an Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar in Global Infectious Diseases for his research on the "Genomic Approach to Improved Immunogenicity of M. Tuberculosis."

Dr. Nina Shaikh-Naidu, former senior clinical associate in surgery, is the recipient of the 2003 Lila A. Wallis, M.D. Women's Health Research Prize based on her paper entitled "Determinants of Patients Aesthetic Satisfaction Following Autologous and Implant Breast Reconstruction." Dr. Shaikh-Naidu, who received $3,000 as part of the award, is the first-ever recipient.

Dr. Richard Silver, clinical professor of medicine, chaired the "Second International Congress of Myeloproliferative Diseases and Myelodysplastic Syndromes" on Oct. 16-18 at the Hilton New York. Weill Cornell participants included Dr. Eric Feldman, associate professor of medicine; Dr. Aaron Marcus, professor of medicine and professor of medicine in pathology and laboratory medicine; Dr. Shahin Rafii, associate professor of medicine, who gave the keynote address on "The Role of Neo-Angiogenesis and Vascular Growth Factors in Progression of Myeloproliferative and Myelodysplastic Disorders"; and Dr. Roy Silverstein, the Mark W. Pasmantier Professor of Hematology and Oncology in Medicine.

Dr. Carl Vaughan, the David S. Blumenthal Assistant Professor of Medicine and assistant professor of medicine, wrote in an e-mail to John Rodgers, coordinator of the annual Health & Wellness Seminars Series—sponsored by the Office of Public Affairs—"You did an awesome job organizing the event. The phones have been ringing for appointments!" Dr. Vaughan was a featured lecturer at the Oct. 28 seminar held in Uris Auditorium, on "Cholesterol and Heart Disease: What's New and What You Need to Know."
