This self-portrait of Chuck Close also serves as the book cover for "Chuck Close, Up Close," by authors Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan (Doling Kindersley Publishing Inc.).
Weill Cornell's Humanities and Medicine Program will feature Chuck Close, a leading figure in contemporary art, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. in Uris Auditorium.
Mr. Close is world-renowned for his larger-than-life portraits. During the event, he will talk about his work and observations, including his struggle with severe learning disabilities and other childhood tragedies, as well as his return to painting after a collapsed spinal artery left him almost completely paralyzed.
The Weill Cornell Humanities and Medicine Series, begun in 1999, offers programs that add dimension to the appreciation of medicine in a broader context, specifically as it relates to the arts and humanities. Along with contributions from outside speakers, the series will capitalize on the talents and interests of Weill Cornell Medical College students, faculty and staff to enhance the educational experience, and to enrich the community.
