Weill Cornell Medical College has completed the Institutional Self-Study in preparation for the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) accreditation site visit scheduled for March 23-26.
The LCME accredits the educational programs leading to the M.D. degree at medical schools in the U.S. and Canada. Accreditation is conducted through a joint commission comprised of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Medical Association and the Canadian Medical Association.
The Medical College was last accredited in 1996, when it received the maximum seven-year accreditation. Preparation for the 2003 LCME accreditation review began more than a year ago, with the naming of a task force that included a steering committee and 10 subcommittees. The preparatory process has continued through this February with the submission of the Medical College's institutional self-study documents to the LCME Secretariat and selected reviewers.
"The voluminous documents created for the process have already been reviewed by the Secretariat and were commended for their completeness while the Summary Report was praised for its concise reporting," said Dr. Antonio Gotto, dean of the Medical College. "The documents describe an exceptionally talented institution that is poised for steady growth in research, faculty, facilities and levels of patient care, and supported by an educational infrastructure that ensures our physician and scientist graduates are prepared for the challenges of the new millennium."
