Dr. LaSalle Leffall Jr. to Present David S. Speer Lecture (March 13)

Dr. LaSalle Leffall Jr., the 2003 David S. Speer Lecturer at Weill Cornell.

Dr. LaSalle Leffall Jr., the Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine, will be the guest of Weill Cornell's Department of Surgery as the 2003 David S. Speer Memorial Lecturer. On Thursday, March 13, Dr. Leffall, will speak on "Ethics in Surgical Practice" at 5 p.m. in Uris Auditorium.

Dr. Leffall is former president of the American Cancer Society and has devoted much of his professional life to the study of cancer and how it relates to African-Americans.

The David S. Speer Lecture in the Department of Surgery was established in 1989 by Mrs. David S. Speer in loving memory of her husband. Dr. Speer received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University (1938) and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School (1943), before beginning his residency program at the New York Hospital in 1943. After a year of military service in Italy and the Philippines, Dr. Speer returned to New York Hospital and completed his residency in 1951. Dr. Speer served as assistant professor of surgery and assistant attending surgeon during his 43 years of devoted service to The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.
