Dr. Richard Kogan
Weill Cornell's Humanities and Medicine Program will present "Music and Illness (Part 2): Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky," with Dr. Richard Kogan, clinical instructor in psychiatry and director of the Human Sexuality Program in the Department of Psychiatry at NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center. The program will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. in Uris Auditorium.
During the program, Dr. Kogan will explore the relationship between inner turmoil and artistic expression, using the works of Tchaikovsky. Chronically wracked by sexual conflict, guilt and depression, Tchaikovsky wrote some of his greatest music while working through his most intense personal crises.
A virtuoso pianist, Dr. Kogan has performed in the leading concert halls of the United States, Europe and Asia. He has been an active chamber musician and has performed regularly in a trio with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Lynn Chang. Dr. Kogan has made presentations showing the connection between mental illness and the musical creativity of Beethoven, Gershwin and Tchaikovsky.
The Weill Cornell Humanities and Medicine Series, begun in 1999, offers programs that add dimension to the appreciation of medicine in a broader context, specifically as it relates to the arts and humanities. Along with contributions from outside speakers, the series will capitalize on the talents and interests of Weill Cornell students, faculty and staff to enhance the educational experience, and to enrich the community. The Humanities and Medicine Series thanks Klavierhaus for their generous donation of a piano for this occasion.
