Dr. James O'Neill Jr., the John C. Foshee Distinguished Professor of Surgery and chairman of Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Department of Surgery, will be the guest of Weill Cornell's Department of Surgery as the Peter C. Canizaro lecturer on Monday, Nov. 25. Dr. O'Neill will present the featured Canizaro Lecture at 8 a.m. in Uris Auditorium. His topic will be "Surgical Experience with 25 Conjoined Twins."
Dr. O'Neill, a New York City native, joined the staff of Vanderbilt in 1995 after serving as surgeon-in-chief at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and as the first C.E. Koop Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine.
Dr. O'Neill, who has a broad interest in general and general thoracic pediatric surgery, and a special interest in vascular surgery in childhood, surgical oncology and conjoined twins, served as a director of the American Board of Surgery for six years. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to surgical education and is board-certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. He also holds certificates of special competence in pediatric surgery and surgical critical care, and is the author of more than 300 publications.
The Department of Surgery established the Peter C. Canizaro Lecture in 1983. During his tenure from 1976-1982, Dr. Canizaro was voted many times by surgical residents as the "best and most popular teacher on staff." Upon his departure from Cornell, the surgical residents requested that a lectureship be established in his honor. (Dr. Canizaro died in September 1990.)
