Dr. Antonio Gotto, dean of the Medical College, and Kevin Brine, campaign chairman for Advancing the Clinical Mission, hosted a dinner on Sept. 17 for the recently formed Weill Cornell Dean's Council. Fifty guests and supporters gathered at the Griffis Faculty Club to hear a presentation by Dr. Ronald Crystal, chairman of the Department of Genetic Medicine, on the groundbreaking work he and his team are doing in combatting bioterrorism through the development of vaccines using gene-therapy techniques.
The Dean's Council is a group of business and social leaders who serve as advocates for the critical mission of academic medical centers and help broaden the circle of support for Weill Cornell. The Dean's Council will also play an integral role in promoting the Campaign.
The success of the College's last capital campaign, New Horizons For Medicine, provided crucial expansion in three key areas of research: structural biology, neuroscience and genetic medicine. In keeping with Weill Cornell's "bench to bedside" model of academic medicine, Advancing the Clinical Mission aims to build on emergent discoveries in scientific research and focus on the College's clinical capacity.

The Advancing the Clinical Mission campaign has raised $365 million in gifts and pledges to date, putting the total at nearly 50 percent of the five-year goal. Mr. Brine is working alongside campaign vice chairmen Sanford Ehrenkranz, Leonard Harlan, Peter Sacerdote, Daisy Soros, and Dr. H. Dirk Sostman, chairman of the Department of Radiology and senior associate dean for clinical affairs, in recruiting new supporters, such as the Dean's Council members, for this historic campaign.
