Construction of the 16-story apartment residence being built for Weill Cornell in the Southtown development on Roosevelt Island continues on schedule. The building, to be completed next year, will have 136 units for Weill Cornell faculty and postdoctoral fellows.

A "topping off" celebration was held on June 25, marking the completion of the steel work for the first two buildings, which are being constructed for Weill Cornell and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

A joint development of the Hudson Companies Inc. and the Related Companies LP, Southtown is being built on a 19-acre site on the southern portion of Roosevelt Island. When the project is complete, the development will include more than 2,000 apartments within a nine-building complex.

"We're very pleased at this opportunity to offer our faculty and postdoctoral fellows superb yet affordable housing, within 25 minutes of the campus, and with some of the best views of Manhattan," said Dr. Antonio Gotto, dean of the Medical College. "Roosevelt Island offers the benefit of being a part of the Manhattan community, while providing residents the amenities and open spaces for recreation and leisure activities generally found only at much greater distances from the city center."

The 136 units in the Weill Cornell building will include 37 studios, 50 one-bedroom, 37 two-bedroom, and 12 three-bedroom apartments. Recreational facilities and other amenities are also planned for the building. Occupancy is expected late next year.
