September 11 Memorials

Dr. Antonio Gotto

The Medical College will commemorate the first anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy through memorials on Sept. 11. Weill Cornell staff and students along with their colleagues at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital will have the opportunity to participate in some memorial activities, marking one of the most tragic events in American history when our nation was the scene of multiple terrorist attacks.

An unveiling of the EMS Memorial, honoring the four Hospital emergency-services staff who were lost in the disaster, will take place near the end of East 70th Street, at 9:30 a.m. Four separate memorial services will take place at the Hospital Chapel at 8:30 a.m.; the Uris Auditorium at 10:00 a.m.; and at the Hospital Chapel at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. A moment of silence will be observed throughout the Medical College and Hospital at 10:28 a.m.

Dr. Antonio Gotto, dean of the Medical College, said, "It is notable that in the face of such a disaster, so many of our employees gave of their time and effort, both as part of their regular jobs and many hours of volunteering to do whatever could be done to help... Each employee played a key part in helping our operations to continue seamlessly in spite of very real technical and practical difficulties resulting from the tragedy."

To recognize the contributions of the many employees who demonstrated strength and unity during the tragic events, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has created a video that all Medical Center employees will receive.
