In this year's national residency "Match" for senior medical students held on March 21, 50% of Weill Cornell postgraduate year one and 60% of postgraduate year one and two appointments are at some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. The event was held in the Medical College's Archbold Commons and was hosted by Dean Antonio Gotto.

Within the class of 2002, 39% of students will receive training in disciplines traditionally associated with primary-care careers: Internal Medicine (24%); Primary Care Medicine (1%); Pediatrics (12%); and Family Practice (2%). In addition, 25% of the class obtained positions in the competitive subspecialties of neurology, neurological surgery, otorhinolaryngology (ENT), ophthalmology, emergency medicine and urology. More than half of the class—57%—obtained PGY1 positions in the New York City area, and 77% will remain in the Northeast. Seven percent of the students obtained postgraduate year one positions in one of our affiliated network institutions.

The National Residency Match Program (NRMP) has discontinued reporting on the number of students receiving one of their first three choices in the residency match, out of concern that a decline in this statistic might subtly inhibit student advisers from encouraging students to strive for highly competitive positions across the country.
