Dr. Stuart S. Asch, professor emeritus of clinical psychiatry, died Jan. 21. He was 79.
A gifted teacher, clinician, and administrator, Dr. Asch was also an honorary attending psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Asch, who joined the Department of Psychiatry in 1976, was known for his verbal fluency and quick sense of humor in the classroom. Among his particular interests was the relationship between postpartum depression and infanticide.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Asch received his A.B. from Columbia University and his M.D. from Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was also a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Asch is survived by his wife, Mary, three children, and two step-children.
A memorial service will be held for Dr. Asch on Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. in Weill Cornell's Uris Auditorium.
