Dr. John A. Evans

Dr. John A. Evans, emeritus professor of radiology, radiologist-in-chief, and former chairman of the department at The NewYork Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, died on Dec. 24 at the age of 92.

A nationally renowned radiologist and pioneer in the field of radiology, Dr. Evans served as chairman of radiology for 24 years (1952–1976). After stepping down as chairman, Dr. Evans remained on staff as an attending radiologist and was active in the department's postgraduate programs.

A 1935 alumnus of Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Evans became interested in the field of radiology during his military service in World War II. During his career, he introduced the technique of nephrotomography, which has the capacity to distinguish malignant kidney tumors from benign cysts, and which has also been useful in the diagnosis of adrenal and other retroperitoneal tumors. Dr. Evans also led the development of intravenous cardiac angiography at the Medical Center.

Dr. Evans was the recipient of many awards, including the Medical Center's highest honor, the Maurice R. Greenberg Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes a senior member of the medical staff who has given exceptional and long-standing service. Dr. Evans also received the Gold Medal from the Radiological Society of North America in 1967 and served as a chancellor of the American College of Radiology in 1953. He also served as president of the American Board of Radiology from 1967 to 1969 and was chairman of the Residency Review Committee that organized the board's first written exam.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Wilson Evans; four children, Linda Franklin, Jane Carreyrou, John T. Evans, and Susan Sterling; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two stepchildren.
