The Cornell University Weill Medical College Alumni Association has conferred its 2001 Honorary Fellowship Awards on Stephen Weiss, chairman emeritus of the Cornell University Board of Trustees and first chairman of the Medical College's Board of Overseers, and Dr. Bruce Ballard, associate dean for Student Affairs and Equal Opportunity Programs and associate professor of clinical psychiatry. The awards were presented at the Honorary Fellowship Reception held at the Union Club on Nov. 26.

Each year, the Alumni Association confers two Honorary Fellowships to non-alumni who have given exceptional service to the Medical College.

Stephen Weiss

Stephen Weiss, a Cornell University alumnus who joined the University's Board of Trustees in 1973, spearheaded the establishment of the Board of Overseers for the Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences in 1980, and served as first chairman of the Overseers. He later served as chairman of the Board of Trustees, and is currently chairman emeritus and a Presidential Counselor, as well as a Life Overseer for Weill Cornell.

Leadership gifts from Mr. Weiss and his wife, Suzanne, have endowed the Deanship of the Medical College and the Frank H.T. Rhodes Distinguished Professorship in Cardiovascular Biology and Genetics.

Dr. Bruce Ballard

Dr. Bruce Ballard has been associated with the Medical College since 1976, when he joined the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry, where he is currently associate professor of clinical psychiatry. A nationally recognized leader in student issues and minority medical education, Dr. Ballard was named associate dean for equal opportunity programs in 1981, and in 1997, he was named associate dean of the consolidated offices of student affairs and equal opportunity programs, a position that he also currently holds. Dr. Ballard received his medical degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.
