Dr. Richard Kogan, pianist and instructor in psychiatry at Weill Cornell.

Weill Cornell's Humanities and Medicine Series (2001-2002) begins on Wednesday, Sept. 5, with a visit by journalist and political commentator Morton Kondracke, whose recently released book "Saving Milly" describes his wife's 13-year battle with Parkinson's disease. Mr. Kondracke, who actively supports efforts to increase resources for research and treatment in Parkinson's disease, serves on the boards of the Parkinson's Action Network and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The Humanities and Medicine program begins at 5 p.m. in Uris Auditorium.

The Humanities and Medicine Series continues on Sept. 12 with a lecture/performance on "Music and Illness (Beethoven, Schumann and Gershwin)" by pianist (and Weill Cornell psychiatrist) Dr. Richard Kogan. A renowned recitalist and orchestral soloist, who has performed in a trio with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Lynn Chang, Dr. Kogan will explore the significance of inner conflict, illness and suffering as sources of inspiration for Beethoven, Schumann, Gershwin and other noted composers. (Klavierhaus has generously provided a Steinway grand piano for this lecture/performance.)
