Dr. Schlegel Named Acting Chairman of Urology

Dr. Peter Schlegel

Dr. Peter Schlegel, associate professor and vice chairman of urology, has been named acting chairman of the department. He will also serve as acting urologist-in-chief at NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center until a new chairman is appointed.

Dr. Schlegel, who joined the Medical Center in 1989, is a leading expert in the treatment of male infertility, especially the interface of male factor treatment with assisted reproductive techniques. He has described the characteristics of men who are candidates for sperm retrieval, designed and described novel sperm-retrieval techniques for use with assisted reproduction, and identified factors that affect the successful achievement of pregnancy after sperm retrieval. Since 1999, he has served as co-director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Microsurgery in Weill Cornell's Institute of Reproductive Medicine.

Dr. Schlegel received his M.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1983. After completing his urology residency at Johns Hopkins, he joined The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center as a clinical fellow in 1989.
