The recently established Department of Neurosurgery, formerly a division of the Department of Surgery, has changed its name to the "Department of Neurological Surgery."
Dr. Philip Stieg, chairman of the department, explains that "neurological surgery" better describes the clinical and scientific activities of faculty, residents and students in the department. "Neurological surgeons are frequently consulted by their medical associates to assist in the diagnosis of diseases of the central nervous system and for their opinions regarding the surgical treatment of diseases. In addition to surgical skills, the neurological surgeon develops expertise in neuroanatomy, differential diagnosis of neurologic disease, and interpretation of diagnostic studies." The name change, he notes, reflects the name of the specialty board: the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
