Dr. David V. Becker, professor of radiology, presented "Chernobyl-Associated Childhood Thyroid Cancer: Status 15 Years After the Accident," at the 10th international conference on Health and the Environment: Global Partners for Global Solutions, held at U.N. headquarters from April 25–27. The conference was organized by World Information Transfer Inc., and was co-sponsored by the governments of Greece and Ukraine.
Dr. Morton Coleman, clinical professor of medicine and co-director of the Center for Lymphoma and Myeloma at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (Weill Cornell campus), testified before the House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations on behalf of the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation and the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America on April 10. Since 1933, the committee has funded the Department of Defense's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program which supports research in breast, prostate and ovarian cancers. Dr. Coleman testified, "Many scientists believe that lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma are the Rosetta Stones of cancer. Researchers believe that understanding how these tumors evolve can help us identify new treatment modalities, and cures not only for these cancers, but for other cancers as well." He cited examples of progress in the blood cancers that would impact the treatment of cancer broadly, including the development of the lymphochip, monoclonal antibodies, radioimmunotherapies, and a new generation of anti-cancer agents like STI571.
Dr. John Daly, the Lewis Atterbury Stimson Professor and chairman, Department of Surgery, was the Samuel L. Perzik, MD Visiting Professor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he lectured on "Malignant Melanoma: Moles to Mountains" on May 17.
Dr. Manikkam Suthanthiran, the Stanton Griffis Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Nephrology, will receive the National Kidney Foundation of NY/NJ's "Pioneer in Medicine Award" on June 14, as part of their 50th anniversary celebration. Dr. Suthanthiran was selected for the new award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the fields of kidney disease and transplantation.
