Students Hold Memorial Service for Those Who Donated Their Bodies to Medical Education and Science

At a memorial service on April 18, first-year medical students remember 22 individuals who donated their bodies to medical education and science.



First-year medical students held a memorial service on April 18 in the Olin Hall courtyard to remember 22 individuals who donated their bodies for medical education and science.

Speakers included Dr. Estomih Mtui, assistant professor of anatomy in neurology and neuroscience, who directs the educational program in anatomy and body visualization; Sister Margaret Theresa Oettinger, O.P., director of pastoral care at the Hospital for Special Surgery and chaplain at NewYork Weill Cornell; Rabbi Stephen Shulman, chaplain, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Dr. Carol Storey-Johnson, senior associate dean for education; Dr. Thomas Maack, professor of physiology and biophysics and professor of physiology in medicine, who directs the human structure and function program; and Michael Pfeffer, president of the first-year class (class of 2004).

During their first-year anatomy classes, groups of four or five students were matched with a cadaver donor for study. At the memorial service, the students expressed their appreciation as each cadaver donor's name was called, and lit candles and placed flowers in remembrance.

Those remembered were Viola, Eugene, Margaret, Francesca, Alan, Elizabeth, Jessie, William, Nicholas, Gordan, Vera, Verna, Salatore, Olaf, Dorothy, Sally, Mary, Helen, William, Ruth, Benjamin and Lillian.
