Dr. Frank Chervenak, who has been acting chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been appointed the Given Foundation Professor and chairman of the department at Weill Cornell. At the Hospital, he has also been appointed obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief for NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center. He will also continue as director of maternal-fetal medicine at the Medical Center.

Dr. Chervenak first came to New York-Cornell in 1987, when he was appointed associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of obstetric ultrasound and ethics. In 1991, he became director of maternal-fetal medicine and director of obstetrics, and in 1992 he was promoted to full professor. Since 1999, when Dr. William Ledger stepped down as chairman, Dr. Chervenak has been acting chairman.

Dr. Chervenak's research interests are in ultrasound, ethics, multiple gestation, and clinical obstetrics and gynecology. He has published more than 150 papers and co-authored or co-edited 10 textbooks. A member of numerous professional societies, he currently serves as president of the International Society of the Fetus as a Patient.

Dr. Chervenak is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. He did his postgraduate training at New York Medical College, St. Luke's–Roosevelt Hospital Center, and Yale University School of Medicine. Before coming to Weill Cornell, he was at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, where he was director of perinatal research.
